Fire District Taking In Hackberry Northeast Of Kingman
HACKBERRY - A rapidly growing north Kingman-based fire district has plans to serve a 10 to 12 square mile area of Hackberry. The Northern Arizona Consolidated Fire District #1 will initially station a fire engine in an RV garage on donated land before a permanent facility is constructed.
Fire District Chief Wayne Eder said the new station will serve and protect Hackberry area residents as well as travelers and tourists along Historic Route 66.
``Providing this fire station fills a void for our district by completing our coverage of the Route 66 corridor, and allows our district to achieve our goal of providing emergency services in rural areas that have traditionally had no type of fire or emergency service," said fire district board chairman Jimmie Bodenhamer.

Havasu Man Draws Prison For Victimizing Teen

KINGMAN - A local judge rejected pleas for probation and imposed a prison term Monday for a Lake Havasu City man who sexually offended a 13 year-old girl. Mohave County Superior Court Judge Steve Conn sent Kevin Crowley, 29, to the Arizona Department of Corrections for seven years.
A sexual abuse and a child molestation charge were dismissed in a plea agreement that had Crowley plead guilty to a reduced charge of attempted child molestation. Defense attorney Sandra Carr argued Crowley deserved a shot at probation.
``This was out of character for him,” Carr said. ``It hasn’t happened before and it’s never going to happen again.”
Prosecutor Megan McCoy refuted Carr’s assertion that the victim “came on” to the defendant. McCoy said the victim resisted his advances and that the victim is of an unlawful age even if she consented to any level of sexual activity.
Judge Conn said that the sexual offenses that Crowley committed rise above the level of simple fondling. He said he found more disturbing indications that Crowley “plied her with alcohol” in an effort to take advantage of the teenager.

Last Call for Leather and Lace Tickets
LAKE HAVASU CITY - It is last call to get a ticket and your opportunity to win a brand new Harley Davidson motorcycle.
The motorcycle, a 2008, 105th anniversary, limited edition Softail Fatboy, is the grand prize in this year’s Happy Harley Days drawing and dinner, an annual fundraising event of the Lake Havasu Area Chamber of Commerce.
Tickets are $250 each and include a steak dinner for two, catered by Shugrue’s. Only 175 total tickets will be sold and are drawn in reverse order, meaning the last man or woman standing wins the prize. Every fifth ticket drawn up until the final 10 also wins a consolation prize. The first ticket drawn of the night wins back their $250 investment.
Theme for the drawing and dinner, which is held in the Rods and Relics Hall at the Aquatic Center, is “Leather and Lace” after the Stevie Nicks ballad which was famous in the early 1980’s. Participants are encouraged to dress according to theme and drive motorcycles to the event where a limited amount of cycle enthusiasts are able to park inside the auditorium.
“This is an important fundraiser for the Chamber,” said volunteer event chairwoman Marcia Kellison. “The Chamber depends on three major events each year to supplement the organization’s budget. Those monies are then used in the Chamber’s projects and programs which are developed to strengthen our local economy.”
To purchase your ticket, please call the Chamber at 855-4115.

McCarran Showing Continued Declines In Passengers
LAS VEGAS, NV - Airline cuts are making a difference in traffic at McCarran International Airport, as evidenced by a 9.9% drop in August compared with a year ago. The facility saw about 3.9 million passengers for the month. However, the decline marked the tenth straight monthly decrease. August's numbers come after an 8.6% decrease in July, which was the biggest monthly passenger drop at McCarran since February 2002. The August decline was due largely to decreases in passengers on the main airlines serving Southern Nevada. In December 2001, traffic at McCarran fell 14.5%, which was the last time there was a drop larger than last month. In all fairness, last month's numbers are being compared to August 2007 -- the busiest month ever at McCarran.
US Airways posted a 22.9% drop with a total of 651,124 passengers. Southwest, the largest Las Vegas carrier with a nearly 34% share of McCarran's total passenger count, was down 7.3% last month to 1.4 million arrivals and departures. United dipped 4.8% and Delta was off by almost 16%.
American was the only top five airline at McCarran that showed an increase, with passenger counts up 7.5%.

The “Good News Report” will air news from the area, state, region, nation, and world and show that sometimes hidden out there among the bad, are many special happy occurrences worth reporting.
If you know of something personally or hear of a story being unnoticed, perhaps from the Internet, let us know. It might make the “Good News Report” and thus, make others feel better that day as well.

TODAY'S GOOD NEWS STORY --
Angels on the Highway –and Beyond
Allison Rix of Los Gatos, California got the fright of her life last week. She was driving on the highway with her six-year-old daughter Erica in the back seat of the SUV. She pulled over immediately when the little girl started screaming loudly. Then, she saw Erica’s left arm caught on the rear window, which was down about six inches. Her hand was – gone…and blood was spurting all over.
Allison didn’t know Erica had been playing with a jump rope she had found. She had put the rope around her wrist and was dangling the handle out the window. Erica later told NBC “I wanted to see it go up and down because I thought it was going to fly.” But, instead, the handle of the jump rope got caught in the SUV's axle. The noose tightened around Erica's wrist, and literally took off her hand. In virtual shock, Allison immediately tried calling a busy 911 and then stood in the road screaming out for the missing hand.
This is a lot of bad news, right? Well, there is a happy ending from this tragic accident. Allison says “her angels” suddenly appeared. First, Jim Bailey, 48, pulled over right away and swiftly applied first aid. Allison, in tears, said “Just like a superhero I like to think of him as, he whipped off his belt and did a tourniquet on my daughter.” Then, Patricia Heller, stopped and found the hand lying in the street, the rope still wrapped around it. She stood over it protectively and directed traffic around it. Another driver, Gail Andrews, called the local police directly, bypassing the busy 911 system.
A fire truck and ambulance speedily arrived and Erica and her severed hand were taken first to a local hospital, and then flown to Stanford University Medical Center, where four surgeons worked over 10 hours to reattach her hand. Allison hoped for the best, but thought only a miracle would allow the hand to be reattached. She told NBC, “I didn’t think it even was a possibility. I just kept praying for my daughter’s life at this point.” However, a doctor came out and told her the lengthy surgery was successful. Allison said “It was the most wonderful day of my life.”
Further surgery will be necessary to reattach nerves and tendons in Erica’s hand, but she should regain substantial function. Since the accident, various strangers have donated money to help defray the major medical expenses. Others have even volunteered to help keep a 24-hour watch on Erica to make sure she doesn’t damage her hand. The firemen who came to her rescue have since visited her at home and let her sit in the fire truck. And Allison today? She praises all who helped -- “Too often, we hear about all the negatives, but people out there are good. There are angels.”
