LEGEND EXTRAORDINAIRE

Debbie Reynolds is one of the few performers who plays in Laughlin who is more famous for her movies than singing on stage. She’s back again at the Riverside Resort Tuesday through Sunday. Her shop stopping numbers are well worth the trip to see one of Hollywood’s great legends. See story below.

Debbie Reynolds’ “Unsinkable” Act
Actress, singer Debbie Reynolds was just a kid (16) when she got her first break in 1948's “June Bride”, followed by the musical “The Daughter of Rosie O'Grady” two years later. Signing with studio powerhouse MGM later that year, she showcased her flair for impersonation in “Three Little Words,” in which she portrayed 1920s vocalist Helen Kane.
But, it was Debbie’s co-starring role in “Singin' in the Rain” (arguably the best movie musical ever) in which she starred opposite Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Jean Hagen that got her worldwide attention. In 1957, Debbie secured a place at number one on the music charts with the sentimental ballad "Tammy" from the popular romantic film “Tammy and the Bachelor,” in which she starred opposite Leslie Nielsen (before he was hysterically funny on screen.)
In 1964, Debbie had the title role in “The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” for which she received an Academy Award nomination. After starring in the short-lived television sitcom “The Debbie Reynolds Show” and “What's the Matter with Helen?” in 1971, she did not act in films for the next two decades. Instead, she turned toward stage work, spending the next few years performing in Las Vegas nightclubs and on Broadway, where she received a Tony Award nomination for the 1973 revival of “Irene.” Much later --in 1996, she headlined her first film in 25 years, when she was cast in the title role of Albert Brooks' endearing comedy “Mother.
Debbie’s personal life had its share of woes, especially the well documented breakup of her marriage to Eddie Fisher when it was revealed that he was having an affair with actress Elizabeth Taylor. The couple had two children, Todd and Carrie (who would later marry and divorce Paul Simon.)
Debbie Reynolds has stories that would take several lifetimes of others to fulfill. She’s still going strong and returns for another dynamic show Tuesday at the Riverside Resort in Laughlin. Now, this is an act to see. Hollywood legend and all.

Former soap actress Eileen Herlie has died from pneumonia. She passed away on Wednesday. Born in Scotland, Eileen began her career in the late 1940s and landed her first big role in the 1948 Best Picture -- Shakespeare's Hamlet opposite Laurence Olivier and then did the same role opposite Richard Burton on Broadway in 1964. But it was her role as Myrtle Lum Fargate in the long-running U.S. TV drama “All My Children” that earned her the most recognition. She joined the popular show in 1976 and was nominated four times for an Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a soap between 1983 and 1986. Eileen Herlie was 90.

The age discrimination lawsuit Stonewall Jackson filed against the Grand Ole Opry was settled on Friday although terms of the settlement have not been disclosed. The 75-year-old singer filed the lawsuit last year, seeking $10 million in compensatory damages and $10 million in punitives. Stonewall said he had lost his health insurance through the Opry because he could no longer meet the financial requirements when his personal appearances were reduced by general manager Pete Fisher. He has returned to performing on the show in recent months. His No. 1 hits include "Waterloo"and "B.J. the D.J."

It’s fairly well known that most country performers tend to be Republican and Hank Williams, Jr. is no exception. He will appear with John McCain and Sarah Palin during a political rally next week in Virginia Beach. Hank will open the 10 a.m. event at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Hank’s publicist says the singer-songwriter is not scheduled to perform at any other McCain rallies before the Nov. 4 presidential election. So, Hank is a Republican. We’ll leave you to guess about the Dixie Chicks.

Pop singer Britney Spears is taking a big chance. She’s decided to turn down an excellent plea agreement of a year’s probation and a $150 fine and go to trial in her misdemeanor driving-without-a-license case. She is claiming she was targeted because she's a celebrity and doesn't deserve even a minor criminal conviction on her record. An appeals court on Tuesday rejected Britney's efforts to dismiss the misdemeanor charge and put the case on hold. She had a Louisiana driver’s license, but had been a California resident for years. Her trial is set for Oct. 15 in Van Nuys.

Judge Judith Sheindlin went to see a new play in London’s West End and was totally surprised during a performance of Rain Man to hear the name Judge Judy mentioned several times during the play. It’s based on the movie that starred Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. The stage production stars Josh Hartnett and Adam Godley. Adams says, "My character mentions her a lot in the play because Judge Judy is his favorite show, but she had no idea - she was just in town and wanted to see a play. I was thrilled to meet her. She loved the show and I got her autograph.
Stolen From Lake Havasu Band?
So is Chris Daughtry (originally of “American Idol” fame) hit song “Feels Like Tonight” really sound like “Tonight,” which Lake Havasu City band, The Asphalt recorded a year earlier than Daughtry? (Give a listen and compare: CLICK HERE)
Randy Mazick, lead singer of The Asphalt is suing Apple and Daughtry for copyright infringement over the tune. Chris was a popular contestant on the fifth season of “Idol” and finished in fourth place. Daughtry’s first album, self titled, was released in 2006 and was the best selling album of 2007.
The Asphalt is a popular four-man band and Randy claims that songwriters Lukasz Gottwald, Martin Karl Sandberg and Sheppard Solomon’s song, (Daughtry’s) “achieved worldwide success and notoriety since its release in November 2006.” He also says the song’s hook is a copy of The Asphalt’s copyrighted song “Tonight,” first publicly performed by Mazick’s band in 2005 and later performed throughout the Southwest.
The complaint was filed Sept. 17 and calls for a jury trial. It states Mazick is “entitled to damages and to defendant’s profits in amounts to be proven at trial, which are not currently ascertainable.” It could take up to three years to go to trial – or it could be settled out of court. Stay tuned!

Leonardo DiCaprio is helping to rebuild an American city devastated by tornados. Vicious winds destroyed 95% of Greensburg, Kansas and killed ten people last year after residents were given just 20 minutes to evacuate their homes and seek shelter The Greenburg Project plans to completely renovate and rebuild the devastated town. Leonardo says -- "The most profound lesson I've learned in all of this work is that people don't want to be told what to do or how to think." He says he will do all he can to help rebuild the city.

There’s going to be another revival of “Guys and Dolls” on Broadway. Actor Oliver Platt has already signed up to play Nathan Detroit in the celebrated musical about New York gamblers. Frank Sinatra played the role in a bit of mis-casting opposite Marlon Brando as Sky Masterson in a 1955 movie version. The musical last appeared on Broadway in 1992, and Nathan Lane was nominated for a Tony for playing Detroit. The new version is scheduled to begin previews on February third at the Nederlander Theatre.

Oscar winner Forrest Whitaker is delighted to land the title role in a new Louis Armstrong biography to be shot in New York and Los Angeles. He received the full approval of the jazz legend’s estate. Forrest will also direct the new movie. He says, "Armstrong left a monumental mark on our lives and our culture. He lived an amazing life and, through his art, shifted the way music was played and would be heard after him, not just here in the U.S. but all over the world." “Satchmo,” as he was called, died of a heart attack in 1971. Documentary producer Ken Burns says he was the greatest jazz artist of all time.
