LEGEND
EXTRAORDINAIRE |
Debbie
Reynolds is one of the few performers who plays in Laughlin
who is more famous for her movies than singing on stage.
She’s back again at the Riverside Resort Tuesday through
Sunday. Her shop stopping numbers are well worth the trip
to see one of Hollywood’s great legends. See story
below.

Debbie Reynolds’ “Unsinkable” Act
Actress,
singer Debbie Reynolds was just a kid (16) when she got her first
break in 1948's “June Bride”, followed by the musical
“The Daughter of Rosie O'Grady” two years later. Signing
with studio powerhouse MGM later that year, she showcased her flair
for impersonation in “Three Little Words,” in which
she portrayed 1920s vocalist Helen Kane.
But, it was Debbie’s co-starring role in “Singin' in
the Rain” (arguably the best movie musical ever) in which
she starred opposite Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Jean Hagen
that got her worldwide attention. In 1957, Debbie secured a place
at number one on the music charts with the sentimental ballad "Tammy"
from the popular romantic film “Tammy and the Bachelor,”
in which she starred opposite Leslie Nielsen (before he was hysterically
funny on screen.)
In 1964, Debbie had the title role in “The Unsinkable Molly
Brown,” for which she received an Academy Award nomination.
After starring in the short-lived television sitcom “The Debbie
Reynolds Show” and “What's the Matter with Helen?”
in 1971, she did not act in films for the next two decades. Instead,
she turned toward stage work, spending the next few years performing
in Las Vegas nightclubs and on Broadway, where she received a Tony
Award nomination for the 1973 revival of “Irene.” Much
later --in 1996, she headlined her first film in 25 years, when
she was cast in the title role of Albert Brooks' endearing comedy
“Mother.
Debbie’s personal life had its share of woes, especially the
well documented breakup of her marriage to Eddie Fisher when it
was revealed that he was having an affair with actress Elizabeth
Taylor. The couple had two children, Todd and Carrie (who would
later marry and divorce Paul Simon.)
Debbie Reynolds has stories that would take several lifetimes of
others to fulfill. She’s still going strong and returns for
another dynamic show Tuesday at the Riverside Resort in Laughlin.
Now, this is an act to see. Hollywood legend and all.
Debbie Reynolds closes tonight. DEBBIE REYNOLDS, 8 PM AT
THE RIVERSIDE RESORT 1-800-227-3849.
The
musical, "Conway Twitty: The Man, the Music, the Legend,"
opened in Nashville Sunday Oct. 12 at the Tennessee Performing
Arts Center. Twitty's story is told through the eyes of his daughters,
Joni and Kathy. Randy Johnson created and directs the production.
Singer-songwriter and producer Anita Cochran, who topped the country
chart with Steve Wariner in 1997 with "What If I Said,"
serves as musical director. The show heads next to Branson, Oct.
22-25. |
Following
a similar exhibit in Nashville, Sparkle & Twang: Marty Stuart's
American Musical Odyssey will make its way to the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. Assembled from Marty's
personal collection of memorabilia, the exhibit covers four
decades of rock, country, rockabilly, bluegrass, rhythm and
blues and gospel music. It includes 300 items, including musical
instruments, stage clothing, handwritten lyrics and photographs.
Among them are Hank Williams' handwritten lyrics "Cold,
Cold Heart" and "Your Cheatin' Heart." Sparkle
and Twang opens Oct. 30 and runs through March 1. Stuart debuted
the exhibit at the Tennessee State Museum in 2007.

Well
you fans of Ringo Starr are almost out of time. Tomorrow it the
final day to send him a letter and expect a picture or autograph
to come back. The former Beatle says he’s just gotten too
busy. Anyway --hurry up! -- if you send it to Ringo after October
20, he'll throw it away. Ringo posted his video message on his
website --calling it a "serious message to everybody watching."
He says -- "Nothing will be signed after the 20th of Octobe.
If that is the date on the envelope, it's gonna be tossed."
That sounds kind of mean. But, if you misunderstood him, he adds
---"I'm warning you with peace and love I have too much to
do.No more fan mail and no objects to be signed. Nothing. Understand?
Nothing!" |

MAIN
STREET DESTINATION
The
Lake Havasu City MainStreet Association and the MainStreet Merchants
Association have teamed up to bring a new, weekly event to the area.
There will be an open-air market every Thursday from 4pm-9pm, excluding
Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. The markets will run through
May. “We’re really excited to bring this event to the street,”
said Jeanne Nelson, Executive Director of the Lake Havasu City MainStreet
Association. “This will help make our Main Street an even more
attractive destination for residents and visitors alike, and drive more
business to our merchants on Main Street.”
The market will take place in the lot between the Red Onion and Sunbelt
Appliance. Shoppers will find handmade crafts, specialty items, organic
produce grown in the region and other unique food and one-of-a-kind
items. “We have some very nice things coming in, as well as unique
merchandise from our businesses located on the street,” Nelson
said. “This will be an excellent chance to find great Christmas
gifts for that ‘person who has everything’, or a little
treat for yourself.”
Nelson stressed that while the market will be selling quality merchandise,
it will be priced for any budget. “This isn’t a flea market
set up, but it’s not overpriced either. Especially today, people
are looking for great values on good products, and that’s what
we have planned… something for everyone, to fit in the family
budget.”
The weekly markets are added to the list of other successful events
held on Mainstreet, such as Winterfest, Halloween Fright Night, Holidays
on Wheels ATV/UTV parade, the Desert Storm boat show and Relics and
Rods Mainstreet Cruise night.
Actress
Cloris Leachman, who is currently competing on "Dancing With
the Stars" at age 82 –is getting yet another honor. The

selected as the grand marshal of the 2009 Rose Parade on New Year's
Day. The theme of the festivities is "Hats Off to Entertainment."
Cloris won her Oscar as Best Supporting Actress in "The Last
Picture Show." She says she’s thrilled to be grand marshal
for a parade that is --- "older than I am." |
Actress
Shannen Doherty has anniunced she will come back for at least two
more episodes of the Beverely Hills, 90210 spin-off series, despite
announcing her departure. She plays the mature version of Brenda
Walsh in "90210," the character she played on the original
teen TV series until 1994. Shannen initially signed-on to appear
in only four episodes of the show, which made its debut in September.
The new ones will air starting November 18. She will re-join Jennie
Garth and another former co-star of the original series, Jason Priestley,

Tim
McGraw says his record label, Curb Records, released a greatest
hits package of his songs against his wishes and without any of
his involvement. Tim adds that he’s been working on a new
studio album for more than a year, playing some of the new songs
on tour and wanted to release the CD this fall. But instead Curb
Records released the greatest hits collection — his third
overall and second since just 2006 — last week just to extend
his recording contract term. Tim says -- “I’m saddened
and disappointed that my label chose to put out another hits album
instead of new music. I’ve only had one studio album since
my last hits package. It has to be just as confusing to the fans
as it is to me.” The 12-track disc includes McGraw hits going
back to 1995 up to his current single, “Let It Go.”
No matter what, Tim doesn’t like it---saying “the whole
concept is an embarrassment to me as an artist.” |

| So
where should a movie star go live after his $2-million-dollar
home burns down? Why, the home of one of your ex-wives, of course.
That’s exactly what Nick Nolte did. He suffered only minor
injuries in the blaze which ripped through his Malibu home on
October 7th. Now, the 67 year old actor is living safely with
his third wife, Rebecca Linger, and their 22-year-old son, Brawley.
Her house is conveniently just up the road from Nick's. It was
the nearest safe place for him and, after all—he helped
pay for it as part of their 1994 divorce settlement.
