Credit Fraud Suspects Nabbed
BULLHEAD CITY, AZ - Following both published and broadcast reports, police in Bullhead City arrested two people in connection with a fraud investigation. In mid-October, the department requested the media’s help to spread information on a credit card fraud investigation in an attempt to identify the suspects pictured in a surveillance video. The department said several tips were called in from residents following the reports.
Public Information Officer Emily Montague said, "A victim reported that someone used a stolen credit card at three local stores and had also attempted to purchase electronics online." She added that three unauthorized transactions were made on the night of October 14th at two Bullhead City businesses and one in Fort Mohave.
Arrested were 39-year-old Daniel Sylvester Nelson and his girlfriend 36-year-old Cheryl Ann Ballard, for fraudulent schemes and controlling a credit card without the owner’s consent. Montague said detectives are still investigating the case as there could be more suspects involved.

Colorado River Clean Up
TRI-STATE - A communitywide event to collect litter in and along the Colorado River is being planned for Jan. 10. "The Colorado River is crucial to the Tri-state and the quality of life here," said Wayne Agner, Mohave Valley Daily News managing editor who is helping coordinate the event. "It is extremely important we keep it cleaned up so that tourists and residents alike can enjoy the river."
A coordinating committee has been formed to organize the effort, officially part of National River Cleanup 2009. The goal will be to pick up trash along both sides of the river from Davis Dam as far south as the number of volunteers allow.
"As far as tourism is concerned, the Colorado is the River of Life and we want to do our part to preserve this priceless and irreplaceable resource," said Sean Hammond, president of Laughlin Tourism Committee. "The resorts of Laughlin Tourism Committee are pleased to work with other local agencies on this effort."
The cleanup will run from 9 a.m. to approximately noon that second Saturday in January. A rain date of Jan. 17 has been set. Snacks and water will be provided to cleanup groups and a post-cleanup party is being planned. To volunteer, either as an individual or a group, call Tommy Bigelow at 928-763-1411 or log on to www.americanrivers.org/goto/crcleanup.tri-state to sign up electronically. For further information about the cleanup, contact Agner at 928-763-2505, ext. 119.

TODAY'S GOOD NEWS STORY --

With all of the bad and sad news that has come out of Iraq, there often are “good news” stories lost in reaching the public. Here’s one. U.S. Army soldiers embedded with the Ramadi, Iraq Provincial Reconstruction Team just met with the mayor of Ramadi to donate needed educational books to local schools.
The books, intended for children in elementary school from first through sixth grade, will be given to teachers in the city for use in their students’ daily curriculum.
The books, printed in Arabic, are designed to help improve daily lessons in core classes and will supplement courses Iraqi teachers and headmasters of district schools are already teaching.
“We are very grateful for the books given to us today,” said Latif Obaid Ayadah, mayor of Ramadi. “The books will immediately be put to good use to teach the future of Iraq.”
The books are part of educational packets distributed by a prominent publishing company in the U.S.
The teaching aids, enough to fill a large warehouse, were ordered by Coalition forces in May. The cost for the books and their shipping totaled nearly $380,000, all donated.
So Far, 25% of the order has arrived, with several more pallets scheduled to arrive soon.
Ramadi has approximately 270 schools that range in size from large buildings to small, one-room classrooms in rural areas. In several small areas and communities, families living near one another send their children to a neighborhood house where they meet each day for classes.

1 IN 700 -- IT ALL ADDS UP

(l-r) Bullhead City Firefighter and Paramedic Mark Medcalf, Captain Dale Stanfield and Engineer/Paramedic Rusty Kreidel -- serving as hazardous materials techs -- are shown unloading a truck with a few cans of paint brought in by a resident. In fact, the fire department says 350 vehicles drove through the Bullhead City drop off point yesterday. "Some people even told us they had items from two or three neighbors," Public Information Officer Larry Tunforss told TSN. He added that "Old gasoline, paints, car batteries and even mercury were dropped off and this year we saw an increase of e-Waste." Those materials included computer monitors, keyboards and hard drives, with a large load of old televisions. The event is sponsored in part by Mohave County, Arizona MVD and the Bullhead City Fire Department. Not to be outdone, Kingman held their event on Saturday where some 337 cars dropped off materials.
